Hey stump nation, still waiting on my Prince, but in the meantime just wondered if a majority of you guys buy a pre-made rub, like ButtRub, Dizzy Pig, etc, make your own, or combine store bought with your own?
Any advice would help. If you have any ideas or recipes you want to share I would appreciate it.

I personally use JOS and Big Ron's Rub bought from their respective websites. Big Bob Gibson's book explains how to make your own all while taking in to account the type of wood you are using, i.e. which flavors it will bring out and which it will subdue.

JOS is Jacks Old South....and yes I own the book but have decided it is cheaper to buy rubs in bulk from someone and know what you are getting consistently as opposed to attempting several and having the possibility of not liking it. I realize that it is trial and error but I personally like both rubs mentioned. By the way, the book is called Big Bob Gibson's BBQ Book. I got mine at Books a Million. Well worth the money spent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Generally, I usr Butt Rub and add to it. Usually, turbinado sugar, sometimes as much as 50% sugar.
The Slabs makes some good stuff, too. Ploughboys is a recent addition to the mix.

And ditto what 13Q said about the book, and making your own versus buying.

http://www.hawgeyesbbq.com has more good rubs and sauces than you will ever have a chance to try in your lifetime.

We use Mike Mills' mixture of magic dust for ribs, and a Texas Dry rub mixture from foodnetwork for brisket and beef shoulder. Butt Rub for butts and Everglades Fish and Poultry rub for chicken. Nothing is set in stone and we constantly try new rubs and mixtures.

I have made my own a few times but its to easy to buy. Butchers Honey Rub, Kosmos Dirty Bird and Cow Cover are awsome and all of Texas BBQ Rub products are great too.
